The fifth edition of the Barça Academy Cup Las Américas has come to an end, having once again demonstrated how consolidated the event has become, with excellent organisation by everyone. After a forced three-year absence due to Covid-19, the competition had a clearly dominant team in Barça Academy República Dominicana, which won three of the five age groups, U8, U10 and U14, while the U12 and U16 trophies were won by Barça Academy Colombians.
420 participants was an extraordinary number for the first post-pandemic event, with footballers from 7 to 16 years of age playing for 45 teams from eight different countries: Barcelona, United States, Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. The games were played on the spectacular ground of the polo club at Los Establos de Cap Cana.
The home team thoroughly impressed at the 2022 Barça Academy Cup Las Américas, which for the third time was enjoying the support of ScotiaBank both with the football tournament and the associated leisure events, with FC Barcelona’s global partners Spotify and Bimbo also contributing. Barça Academy República Dominicana have won every edition of the U14 category since it started, and this year was no exception, beating Barça Academy Guatemala in the final. They also beat Barça Escola Barcelona in the U8 final and Colombia in the U10 final.
Barça Escola Barcelona also lost the U12 final, 3-2 to the team from Colombia, and in U16, the only 11-a-side category, Barça Academy Colombia won the final on penalties following a 0-0 draw against the combination of Barça Academy PRO academies from New York and Miami in the USA.
The trophies were presented by Domenec Guash, Project Executive of Barça Academy in the Americas; Bernat Villa, Technical Director of Barça Academy in America; Antonio Gutiérrez, director of new business and institutional relations of Caribbean FC, and Danilo de la Pava, manager of international sponsorship at Scotiabank.
The tournament ended just in time for the players and their families to watch the World Cup Final on a giant screen fitted for the occasion. Naturally, the vast majority supported their Latin American cousins from Argentina, who they cheered on from the very first moment through to the winning penalty.
