The blaugranes draw but go on to lose on penalties, which sees them eliminated from the European youth competition

The FC Barcelona U19A side are out of the UEFA Youth League after losing in the playoff round away to Mainz 05. Óscar López's side drew the game but ended up losing on penalties.

Even start and a goal apiece

The atmosphere in the Bruchwegstadion, the Mainz 05 first-team's stadium, was vibrant. Both sides began by having efforts thwarted from crosses into the area from wide. Neither side were really controlling the game and the battle was mainly being fought in midfield.

However, Mainz 05 opened the scoring through a great individual move by Daniel Gleiber, the German beating Héctor Rangel before finishing under Diego Kochen (1-0, min. 24). Óscar López' side persisted and got their rewards ten minutes later, a Xavi Espart cross reaching the opposite fullback, Albert Navarro, who headed back in for Noah Darvich to head in the equaliser from inside the area (1-1, min 34).

Dani Rodríguez then couldn't quite finish a Albert Navarro pass across the penalty area, but it was looking promising for Barça as the half time whistle blew.

Dani Rodríguez shines but the Germans equalise

A great start to the second half for the blaugranes, Dani Rodríguez picking up a rebound from a Mainz 05 free kick on the edge of his own area, before carrying the ball almost the length of the pitch to fire past Louis Babatz (1-2, min. 48).

A nice bit of skill by Noah Darvich saw him seek out Juan Hernández, but the number 9 just couldn't connect with the cross, which was a pity, as Mainz 05 equalised after Philipp Schulz scored on the turn after the blaugrana defence and keeper were out of position from a previous passage of play (2-2, min. 73).

Mainz 05 then hit the woodwork just before the final whistle through a great long shot by Daniel Gleiber, but Óscar López' side stood firm and it was down to penalties to decide who went through to the next round of the UEFA Youth League.

Mainz 05 win on penalties

Penalties are always a painful watch, and although Diego Kochen saved one to potentially halt the German side's progress, their own keeper made more saves to see Barça go out of the European competition.
